This 1972 Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer 710M is a soft-top troop carrier that was reportedly used by the Swiss Armed Forces prior to its importation to the US and acquisition by the seller around two years ago. Finished in drab green, the truck is powered by an air-cooled 2.5-liter inline-four mated to a five-speed manual transaxle with a two-speed transfer case and two hydraulically-locking differentials. Additional equipment includes a rear pintle hitch, center console, portal axles, two rows of folding rear bench seats, and Hella H4 headlights. Work during current ownership has included rebuilds of the carburetors, steering box, drag links, and wheel cylinders, as well as the installation of a replacement windshield, brake master cylinder, tie rod ends, ball joints, and batteries.
The truck was refinished in its current shade of drab green following a dent repair around the front of the vehicle during current ownership. The side rails received areas of wood filler prior to a repaint in flat black, and the seller states that the windshield was replaced and the rear bumpers, brake drums, and steering column have also been repainted. A removable canvas soft top with roll-up sides and plastic windows is installed, and additional features include Hella H4 headlights, a roof-mounted radio antenna, rear pintle hitch, storage lockers, and upgraded taillights. The seller notes that the hazard flashers only illuminate the front marker lights, and other issues include rust on the inside of the passenger-side rear body panel and corrosion around the transmission cover. An uninstalled and untested WARN 24V front winch accompanies the vehicle.
Body-colored 16” steel wheels are mounted with Westlake Radial SL369 A/T tires that are said to have been recently installed. A full-size spare is mounted to the swing-out rear cargo door, and an additional set of wheels is included in the sale. The seller reports that the rear emergency brake is in need of adjustment and notes a leak from the steering box output shaft. Pinzgauer 716M shocks have been installed and the steering box and draglinks have been rebuilt during current ownership. Additional work included replacement of the following:
- Brake lines
- Brake master cylinder and booster
- Tie rod ends and ball joints
- Emergency brake switch
The cabin features bucket seats that have been reupholstered in black vinyl with a brown seat back for the driver. Features include a central roll bar, steel checker-plate floors, sliding side windows, a Garmin GPS system, a fire extinguisher, and a removable center console with a cupholder and 12-volt accessory outlets. The seller notes excessive travel in the brake pedal along with an inoperable heater fan. Cracks are visible in the center console.
A three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a body-colored metal dashboard housing a VDO fuel level gauge. Controls for the shift-on-the-fly hydraulically-operated locking differentials and four-wheel drive are mounted in the center console, and push/pull breaker buttons on the dash control circuits for the 24-volt electrical system. The VDO electric speedometer was installed during previous ownership and is said to be inoperable. Total mileage is unknown .
The cargo area houses a storage shelf, along with two rows of foldable inward-facing troop seats.
The air-cooled 2.4-liter inline-four is mounted between the front seats and sends power to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission, a two-speed transfer case, and locking front and rear differentials. An electronic ignition system has been installed, and the seller reports that a tune-up was performed and the fluids changed in early 2021. Leaks are noted from the outer seal of the transfer case and above the transmission.
